Being a celebrity, as we imagine it to be is definitely not all fun and games. It’s like being under arrest or something – because literally everything you say or do will and can be held against you. You’re always under public eye and your every step will be watched and judged. Once you happen to make a faux pas, or establish to yourself a particular persona, be it a good one or a bad one, it is harder than you think to break free from that shell, and recreate yourself in the world of stardom.
Let’s take a look at these celebrities who beat the odds and successfully rebranded themselves, becoming all the more successful with their new avatars in tinseltown.
1. Victoria Beckham
‘Fashion Icon’ is a phrase too small to describe Victoria Beckham’s importance in the fashion industry today. But winding the clock back around 15 years, Victoria was a pop star who had a completely different image amongst the people. Her band, ‘The Spice Girls’ was one of the most famous girl bands of the time alongside ‘Atomic Kitten’, and Victoria sported the nickname ‘Posh Spice’. But following her marriage to David Beckham and the dissolving of ‘The Spice Girls’, she suddenly had her second stint of fame with the infamous ‘Victoria Bob’ which was the catalyst that brought her to the ‘fashion mogul’ status she boasts of now. Victoria now has her own luxury fashion label.
2. Bradley Cooper
Hands down, one of Hollywood’s most acclaimed celebrities of the present. Myriad roles performed with perfection, which gives us the license to call him one of the most versatile actors we’ve ever seen. ‘The Silver Linings Playbook’, ‘The Place Beyond The Pines’, ‘American Sniper’, ‘Dallas Buyers Club’, etc. are some films where Cooper has had some of his best moments. But, not too long ago, he was nicknamed as ‘America’s favorite jerk’, with a line of films where he played the same, annoying douchebag of a role. ‘Sex and the City’, ‘Wedding Crashers’, ‘Hangover’ etc. were films that painted him in the same hue, leading to him acquiring the ‘douchebag’ tag
3. Taylor Swift
I was one amongst the millions who believed that all that was to Taylor Swift was pretty pastel dresses, curly hair, and songs of teenage love and break-ups. But her timely decision to change her image from her looks to her songs definitely did her good. The formula consisted of bright red lipstick, a chic bob haircut and a radically different spy-themed song about girl power. Talk about a changeover!
4. Jessica Alba
Jessica Alba is a personification of beauty. Her looks took her places in Hollywood that no one would have imagined of. Her roles in ‘Honey’, ‘Sin City’, ‘Into The Blue’ etc. didn’t particularly challenge her acting abilities much, but took her to fame as she carried herself on screen with perfection. But a few years down the line, Alba waded away from the waters of showbiz and ventured into business with a baby product company named ‘Honest’. This added a whole new dimension to her celebrity status. The company now deals with fashion products also and is now worth over $1.7 billion.
5. Matthew Mcconaughey
We all remember Mathhew McConaughey’s roles in ‘Wedding Planner’, ‘How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days’, ‘Fool’s Gold’. These, ranging from good to not-so-good romantic flicks awarded McConaughey with a not-so-appreciated ‘lover boy’ tag in tinseltown. He slowly started breaking away from the ordinary roles he was used to doing, to remind people that he could act to. He reached the peak of his career with ‘Dallas Buyers Club’, ‘True Detective’ and ‘Interstellar’. Matthew successfully morphed from the so-so Casanova to an Oscar awardee.
6. Christina Aguilera
I grew up listening to her ‘Genia In A Bottle’ and was one of her biggest fans. Christina Aguilera was a teenage pop sensation during the early 2000s. The long locks of blonde braided hair, the ripped pants and the bubblegum pop songs were the defining characteristics of Aguilera’s pop career. But later on, she came back bigger (literally), bolder and much much…dirtier? She evolved into a voluptuous powerhouse, gaining the name ‘Xtina’ for her sleazy, yet alluring looks on the red carpet.
7. Britney Spears
Without a doubt, back in the early 2000’s, Britney was the reigning Queen of Pop. Her songs all found a place on the top of the charts and her fans revered her every move. Britney was beautiful, talented and successful. Just when you thought, nothing could go wrong, fame got the better of young Britney and her career plummeted down to a new low. She ended up having a mental breakdown, shaved her head, had several failed marriages and a few scuffles with the paparazzi. Britney had to rebrand herself and re-emerge before she fizzed out for good. She started off by judging a reality show, following the releasing of a few singles (hits, obviously) and now has regained stability in her mental state and also her career. Once again, she’s one of Hollywood’s favorite celebrities. Hit me baby one more time? She sure did!
8. Justin Bieber
By far, probably the greatest comeback ever given by a person so young, that too single handedly! We all remember his ‘Baby’ days, where Justin, not only had a massive massive fan base of young girls, but also had an equally massive hate club for his effeminate looks and behavior. Following his break-up with Selena Gomez, Justin was caught up in a lot of controversy, which brought his music career to what people thought, it’s well deserved end. But the Justin we saw during ‘The Roast of Justin Bieber’, was one we had never seen before. He owned up to his mistakes in public, changed his appearance and released his new album, ‘Purpose’. Now people who once hated him, sheepishly call themselves ‘Beliebers’ too. Way to go Justin!
